Insemination - The gentle method

Insemination: THE GENTLE METHOD TO FULFILL YOUR DESIRE FOR A CHILD

The insemination, the transfer of sperm, is a long-standing established fertility treatment. At the most fertile point in the woman's menstrual cycle, the male's sperm are introduced directly into the uterine cavity. This allows more spermatozoa to reach the egg faster than naturally. We have years of experience with insemination and this treatment has already helped many couples to fulfil their wish of a child.

Insemination: gentle solution for all couples with a desire to have children

Semen transmissions are just as possible for heterosexual couples as they are for lesbians. The treatment is a gentle way of fulfilling your desire for children.

We distinguish in:

  • Homologous insemination: Here the sperm comes from the partner.
  • Heterologous Insemination: The sperm comes from a donor. This is not only an option for lesbian women, but also for women whose partner is infertile. For this form of semen transfer, you must submit a notary's deed confirming that you agree with the use of donor sperm. After the birth of a child, both partners are considered legal parents, regardless of whether they are a heterosexual or a lesbian couple.

Origin of the sperm used

Well prepared, well planned and carefully carried out

In the Wunschkind Klinik we carry out the so-called Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): We transfer the sperm directly into the uterus of the woman. The success of an insemination depends, in large part, on the sperm being transmitted at the optimal time in the woman's cycle. This is the case when the follicle is between 17 and 22 millimeters in size.

Depending on the procedure we distinguish in:

  • IUI in the natural menstrual cycle. We closely monitor your cycle and use ultrasound to measure the size of your ovarian follicles. In this way we can determine the time of ovulation and use the optimal moment for the transmission of the sperm.
  • IUI with hormone therapy. To increase the chances of getting pregnant, we sometimes perform hormonal stimulation on the woman before an insemination. As a result, several ova mature in the ovaries. When they reach the right size, we trigger ovulation and introduce the sperm into the uterus.

The right time for insemination is crucial for the chances of success. Therefore, couples who want to undergo insemination should be flexible in their time. An essential prerequisite for any insemination is that the Fallopian tubes are open. We clarify this through our diagnosis.

For insemination we use either fresh or previously frozen (cryopreserved) sperm from the partner, or donor sperm from a sperm bank. The partner obtains the fresh sperm directly at our clinic, in a discreet room especially designed for this purpose. In some cases it is necessary to take the sperm directly from the man's testicle. In case of this procedure, we work together with specialists.

Before insemination, we prepare the sperm in our laboratory. Only the more mobile sperm are used. The transfer into the uterus takes place with a catheter, through the vagina. Then nature takes its course. Together with you we are looking forward to the result. After about three weeks, with a pregnancy test we will find out if the procedure was successful and therefore you are pregnant. Another three weeks later you can already detect the heartbeat of the child on ultrasound.

Whether you become pregnant after insemination depends on several factors:

  • Your age matters.
  • The physical conditions of the woman are relevant.
  • A minimum number of fertile sperm cells is necessary.

In addition, only one treatment cycle is often not enough to achieve a pregnancy. For most women, several attempts are necessary. Per treatment cycle and depending on the age, the pregnancy rate is between 12 and 20%. After one year, 80% of couples are looking forward to a pregnancy. For every fifth couple, the sperm transfer unfortunately does not succeed. From experience we know that after three or four unsuccessful inseminations, it is usually better to think about IVF treatment.

In principle, insemination treatment is low-risk.

However, situations may arise that may require further treatment or accompaniment:

  • Physical stress on women through hormonal stimulation
  • Infections
  • Mental stress

An unfulfilled desire to have a baby is already a big challenge for most couples. Hormone therapy can lead to depressive moods that increase the emotional burden.

Then it is time to wait and see if a fertilization has taken place.

After about three weeks, we determine by pregnancy test, if it worked and you are pregnant. Another three weeks later you can already detect the heartbeat of the child on ultrasound.

In these situations, we advise you to semen transfer:

  • If your sperm quality is limited: If you have too few fertile sperm or if your sperm cells are too slow to move.
  • If you have erectile or ejaculation problems.
  • If the sperm in the woman can not reach the uterus.
  • If the cervical mucus is overexcitable for the sperm cells during ovulation.
  • If you can not have sexual intercourse, for example because of physical limitations.

Seed transfers are in principle low in risk. Nevertheless, situations may arise that require further treatment or accompaniment:

  • Physical stress on women through hormonal stimulation.
  • infections.
  • mental stress. An unfulfilled desire to have a baby is already a big challenge for most couples. Hormone therapy can lead to depressive moods that increase the emotional burden.

In addition, couples who opt for an insemination, should deal in advance with the idea of multiple pregnancy. In some cases, hormonal stimulation and the introduction of fertile sperm cells fertilize several oocytes.

For most women, several attempts are necessary until pregnancy occurs. Per treatment cycle and depending on the age, the pregnancy rate is between 12 and 15%. From experience we know that after three or four unsuccessful inseminations, it is usually better to think about artificial insemination.

For lesbian couples, the chances of success in insemination are slightly higher, as sufferers suffer significantly less from endometriosis, PCOS and closed fallopian tubes

That depends on your personal situation. In most cases, several attempts are necessary until pregnancy occurs.
